AMR is an urgent health challenge—leading to more than <a href="https://www.amractionfund.com/threat-of-amr" rel="noopener" target="_blank">1.27M deaths globally</a> each year. And its toll is only expected to grow; by 2050, it is estimated there will be 10M deaths from AMR each year.

Production  
Last year, we took bold steps to ensure our sites were addressing antimicrobial resistance (AMR) throughout the entire manufacturing process. We were one of six companies to participate in an AMR Industry Alliance (AMRIA) certification pilot at our Germany manufacturing site. The pilot program supports appropriate control of antimicrobial manufacturing waste. We also were one of the first two pharmaceutical companies to receive the British Standards Institution (BSI) Manufacturing Certificate—meeting international standards that ensure antibiotics are made responsibly.

Protection  
Exposure to antibiotics or antifungals through the environment, including water and soil, increases the risk of AMR. We have strict protocols across all our sites to prevent pharmaceutical pollution, keeping active pharmaceutical ingredients out of our wastewater. 

Education  
Once medicines leave our sites, we work hard to make sure healthcare providers and patients use antibiotics correctly. We recently piloted a new program in Germany to share AMR prevention tips with those picking up antibiotics from a pharmacy or clinic. Digital messages help patients learn how to prevent AMR—already reaching over 11,000 pharmacies, 50,000 healthcare professionals and 200,000 patients—and prompt important, educational conversations between providers and patients.

Collaboration  
We serve on the board of the AMRIA, which convenes more than 100 healthcare companies and associations. We also contribute to the AMR Action Fund, the world’s largest public-private partnership investing in new antimicrobial initiatives.

Developed by and for students, REP4®FinLit will include a variety of digital tools to help young adults become more comfortable with their personal finances, including a quiz identifying a “Money Mindset” that provides insights about spending habits and relationships with money.

REP4®FinLit is an extension of this commitment to financial empowerment. It began as an idea pitch through <a href="https://rep4.org/" target="_blank">REP4®</a>, a national alliance founded by Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Mich. and other higher education partners across the country. It is designed to empower high school and college students to collaboratively design the future of higher education through idea generation and the creation of prototypes such as REP4®FinLit.

“We are incredibly grateful to the Fifth Third Foundation for their generous support of this program,” said Grand Valley State University President Philomena V. Mantella. “Thanks to their partnership, our students will be able to build out and share this engaging and important digital experience with students across the country.”

Students have been designers of the project since its inception, from the high school group that developed the initial prototype through REP4 in 2021, to the team of GVSU students who are designing, developing and testing the program.

This prototype represents more than just learning how to budget or manage debt; it is about peer-to-peer empowerment and closing the knowledge gap that many students face.”

With financial support from the Fifth Third Foundation, REP4®FinLit is expected to launch statewide in Michigan in 2025 and nationally in 2026.

Fifth Third Empowers Next Generation With Financial Literacy Solutions

U.S. Marine Corps Staff Sargeant Dominic Fernandez stood proudly as he and his family received a new 2024 Chrysler Pacifica minivan. After serving multiple tours of combat overseas and dedicating years of service to his country, it was his time to be served. The vehicle marks the 50th payment-free vehicle donated by U.S. Bank and Freedom Alliance and the 80th vehicle donated by U.S. Bank overall since the inception of the Driven to Serve program in 2018. It also marks the 12th vehicle donated just in 2024.

U.S. Bank has a long history of supporting veterans and active military employees, customers and community members. In addition to vehicles, U.S. Bank also partners with Freedom Alliance and Operation Homefront to donate mortgage-free homes to veterans, providing stabilization for them and their families. Since 2013, U.S. Bank has donated 28 homes to veterans across the United States, with two additional home donations planned by the end of 2024. U.S. Bank has also helped fund 29 critical home repair projects for veterans since 2017.

U.S. Bancorp Impact Finance, the community investment and tax credit division of U.S. Bank, recently supported the completion of an affordable housing project benefitting veterans in California. A <a href="https://www.jamboreehousing.com/" target="_blank">Jamboree Housing</a> affordable housing development, <a href="https://www.usbank.com/about-us-bank/company-blog/article-library/former-orange-county-econo-lodge-transformed-into-affordable-housing.html" target="_blank">Buena Esperanza</a> is a former Econo Lodge motel that was revitalized to include 69 studio units of permanent supportive housing for formerly homeless individuals, with 20 reserved for veterans. The development also includes a social gathering place, kitchen and food pantry.

U.S. Bancorp Impact Finance and Jamboree have a longstanding partnership, with the first deal closing in 2001. Impact Finance has collaborated with Jamboree to provide about $281 million in debt and $106 million in equity to support its affordable housing projects across California.

Supporting Military Veterans and Active Service Members Everyday

This year, a live-stream format connected four interactive scientific challenges, offering young participants a dynamic and engaging experience. Engagement reached new record highs as nearly 3,000 viewers tuned into the live stream, and approximately 1,200 youth from 26 provinces and cities across China participated.

The 2024 Chemours Magical Science Camp introduced an exciting new storyline mode—an immersive adventure through challenges and puzzles that guided young participants on a journey of scientific discovery. Through real-time thinking, hands-on experimentation, and close interaction with instructors, students experienced the full spectrum of scientific exploration.

The event started with the “Vanishing Footprints” experiment, where students used a pH indicator to reveal vibrant magenta footprints, leading them on a treasure hunt. The second challenge, “Liquid Movers,” appeared simple but was rich with scientific principles, including Bernoulli's principle, siphoning, paper fiber absorption, and transparency of crystalline materials. Students transformed into "movers," making water flow uphill, as paper flowers, nourished by the water, blossomed to reveal hidden numbers. The third challenge, “Magic Magnifier,” combined physics and chemistry principles. Participants decoded the secret equations hidden within colorful statements using pH indicators and optical filtering. The final challenge, “Mini Hot Air Balloon,” utilized the reaction of citric acid with sodium carbonate to produce a burst of carbon dioxide, allowing students to witness the remarkable phenomenon of a balloon inflating without any breath. Following each challenge, a brief classroom session deepened the understanding of the scientific principles at play, enriching the students’ grasp of the concepts in a fun and engaging way.

The new Case IH Quadtrac 715, won Tractor of the Year 2025 in the HighPower category for models over 300 horsepower. The judging panel based their assessments on areas including engine performance, fuel efficiency, transmission smoothness and reliability. Designed to help the largest farm businesses cover ground as efficiently and sustainably as possible, while minimizing fuel use, labor hours and soil compaction, the new Quadtrac 715 features an FPT Cursor 16 TST twin-stage-turbo engine.

The STEYR® Plus won Tractor of the Year 2025 in the Utility category. Launched last year, the 4120 Plus 70-150 horsepower model has a range of features that impressed the judging panel. Gratitude is all about recognizing that something good has come into your life thanks to someone else. It’s that feeling of positive acknowledgment that often arrives through kindness or support we didn’t necessarily earn. And in today’s hyper-connected world, where tech is always at our fingertips, here’s a twist: Could our devices help us unlock more genuine gratitude?

In a recent chat with <a href="https://greatergood.berkeley.edu/profile/emiliana_simon_thomas" target="_blank">Emiliana Simon-Thomas</a>, Science Director at UC Berkeley’s Greater Good Science Center, we explored how tech and our phones can positively impact gratitude practices, turning everyday interactions into opportunities for appreciation and helping us build deeper connections with those around us.

Technology Expands Gratitude Research and Accessibility

To even have this conversation around gratitude, Simon-Thomas says, it’s imperative to recognize how technology has made her research more valuable. Traditionally, gratitude research was limited to small groups in controlled environments, but she explains that technology has broken down those barriers. Today, studies can reach thousands of people from all backgrounds, making gratitude research more inclusive and widespread.

“When I did neuroscience research, 16 to 20 people was my sample size. Now, over 90,000 people have completed one of our web-based, mobile-optimized programs,” says Simon-Thomas. “We are getting data from people all over the world and from all walks of life, leading to more meaningful insights and greater inclusivity.”

Yes, we’ve said it before (like <a href="https://es.t-mobile.com/news/community/holiday-psa-how-to-thank-someone-best-just-text" target="_blank">here</a> and <a href="https://www.t-mobile.com/news/community/holiday-psa-that-thinking-of-you-text-you-should-send-it" target="_blank">here</a>), but we’ll say it again: Sending a “thank you” text can have the same effect as a handwritten note. But the power lies in the details. Gratitude becomes more impactful when it’s specific, Simon-Thomas notes.

“If you express gratitude and you describe what the person did, the effort they put forth and how it led to good, you're creating accountability for the other person's gesture of goodness to you, which is much more powerful," says Simon-Thomas. “People feel more recognized and appreciated when you provide that kind of detail, and it doesn't take that much longer. Speaking unscientifically, I would argue that with the extra 20 to 30 seconds it takes to compose that much of a message, the benefit is 20 to 30 times better.”

This specificity can be easily integrated into digital communications, she says. Instead of just sending a generic thank you text, take a moment to elaborate on what you appreciate. For instance, saying, “Thank you for always being there for me during tough times,” can resonate more deeply than a simple “TYSM.” This approach not only strengthens relationships but also enhances an individual’s personal feeling of gratitude.

And to avoid gratitude becoming just another checkbox activity, consider personalizing your messages. Use your phone’s features — like sending <a href="https://www.t-mobile.com/news/community/our-new-crush-voice-notes" target="_blank">voice notes</a> or using video messages — to share your feelings in a more heartfelt manner. These small changes can make your expressions of gratitude feel more sincere and engaging.

The grant, the largest gift in the organization’s history, is targeted for capacity building as Family Promise of WNY is in the initial stages of building a second emergency family shelter site in Buffalo. Projected to open in 2027, the new shelter site will more than double their ability to serve the Erie County family homeless population. The grant will support the addition of two key positions at the organization – a Housing Specialist who will provide more targeted intervention to assist homeless families securing permanent housing and a Development Director to help grow the organization’s fiscal position.

“Family homelessness is at crisis levels in our community right now. On any given night, there are over 100 families who need a space in shelter - but there are simply no spaces for them. That is why we are trying to open a second family shelter,” said Luanne Firestone, Executive Director of Family Promise. “Taking a small organization to the next level is hard. We are simply overwhelmed by and grateful for the opportunity that this KeyBank Foundation grant provides to our growing shelter program. We are confident that this capacity-building grant will allow us to house families faster and provide the strongest foundation possible for our future expansion in the community.”

One of the highlights in this year’s report is the early success of the Healthy Neighbor program, a transformative initiative addressing health inequities in chronic disease care.

Established in collaboration with Virtua Health, a 15,000-person academic health system, Healthy Neighbor extends access to integrated clinical and social care for hypertension and diabetes management within Camden, New Jersey. Launched in 2023, Healthy Neighbor trained a team of dedicated community health workers and a registered nurse to provide tailored support, combining SPICE, the <a href="https://spice.docs.medtroniclabs.org/" target="_blank">Medtronic LABS open-source digital health platform,</a> with social resource navigation.

Early results1 show that 71% of enrolled patients with high blood pressure and 63% of patients with previously uncontrolled diabetes achieved meaningful progress in blood pressure and blood glucose control.

<ul><li>Secured energy expected to meet 50% of its electricity needs across its five Irish sites, reinforcing Medtronic’s commitment to a healthier planet through a recent Power Purchase Agreement.2</li>
	<li>Achieved a 52% reduction in emissions intensity compared to FY20, surpassing its FY25 target of a 50% reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions intensity.</li>
	<li>Met 42% of operational energy needs with renewables and are on track to achieve its target of sourcing 50% of energy from renewable and alternative sources by FY25.</li>
	<li>Reduced operational waste by 19% and water use intensity by 28% since FY20. The company is also 90% of the way to achieving its goal to reduce packaging waste by 25% for four targeted, high-volume product families compared to FY21.</li>
